Bathroom Fans Take the Steam out of Steamy Showers
If you love to take steamy showers but hate the grimy mould that can build up and grow in such a humid environment then you could probably use a bathroom fan. Bathroom fans are a great way of keeping the humidity levels in a bathroom down and also for circulating the air. Installing a fan is not so difficult although you do need access to the exterior of your home from the bathroom in order for the air to be blown out somewhere and you need a certified electrician to hook it up for you – unless you are comfortable hooking up electrical appliances.
When looking to purchase a bathroom fan there are a few things to keep in mind. You must purchase a fan that is strong enough to service the area that you intend to cover. If your bathroom is eighty square feet then you need a fan that can service at least eight if not one hundred square feet. If your bathroom is three hundred square feet then you will need a much bigger fan to function properly in such a big space, otherwise you risk wasting your investment. The other thing you must look for is for noise. Some fans are powerful but extremely noisy whereas other fans are very quiet. It is highly recommended that if you are looking into buying a fan for your bathroom that you spend a little bit more money and get a good model of fan that will not make too much noise and which will last a longer time than the cheaper models. Especially large bathrooms may even benefit from having a fan directly inside the shower stall and another one over the bathtub – if those two fixtures are separate.
There is no rule that you must have a fan in your bathroom, however, if you do not have adequate ventilation then you risk developing troublesome moulds that are not only unsightly but bad for your health. Some strains of mould can lead to pneumonia, eczemas and other infections. If you do not have the budget to install a fan in your small, enclosed bathroom, then a good suggestion is to keep the door open while showering in order to let some air in and some steam out. This is obviously hard to do if you live with roommates or even kids, but if you can do so then it will definitely help. Otherwise you will need to wash your bathroom every other day in order to maintain it mould and germ free.
